Sumatra Flooding Update: What Travelers Need to Know (November–December 2025)
Massive Flooding Across Sumatra – Current Situation
In the last week of November, Sumatra experienced exceptionally heavy and continuous rainfall, causing rivers to rise rapidly and overflow across multiple regions. The flooding escalated quickly, cutting off thousands of villages from access to electricity, clean water, food supplies, and emergency aid.
Entire communities were submerged. Homes, crops, livestock, and personal belongings were destroyed, leaving families with nothing but what they could carry. In many remote areas, roads collapsed or were completely washed away, making access extremely difficult for rescue and emergency teams.
At this moment, emergency responders are still trying to reach isolated villages, and the situation remains critical. According to current estimates, around 1,000 people have lost their lives, with many more displaced.
Areas Affected by Flooding in Sumatra
The flooding has impacted multiple provinces across the island:
North Sumatra
- Ketambe
- Tebing Tinggi
- Medan
Aceh
- Tanjung Pura
- Pidie Jaya
- Langsa
West Sumatra & Surrounding Regions
- Padang
- Mentawai Islands
- Pariaman
- Central Tapanuli
- Sibolga
These areas have experienced severe flooding, infrastructure damage, and displacement of local communities.
Important Update for Travelers: Tourist Areas Not Affected
We want to clearly reassure travelers that major tourist destinations in Sumatra remain safe and unaffected by the floods, including:
- Bukit Lawang
- Berastagi
- Lake Toba
Access roads, accommodations, trekking routes, and essential services in these areas are operating normally. Travel plans to these destinations do not need to be canceled, though we always recommend staying informed and traveling responsibly.
A Humanitarian Crisis Behind the Headlines
For many rural and remote villages, this disaster is not just temporary flooding — it is a complete loss of livelihood. Families have lost homes built over generations, farmland that provided food and income, and access to basic medical care.
With rain continuing in some regions, the risk of secondary flooding and landslides remains high.
