6D/5N North Sumatra Highlights Tour
If you want to witness the absolute crown jewels of North Sumatra in a single, seamless itinerary, this fast-paced 6-Day, 5-Nights Highlights Tour is precisely what you are looking for.
The Ultimate 6-Day North Sumatra Highlights Expedition
Crafted beautifully for curious adventurers who want to maximize their experience, this private expedition spans across three completely distinct worlds: the ancient, wild jungle canopies, the cool volcanic highlands, and the majestic island calderas.
While this epic route involves a decent amount of panoramic driving and changing accommodations along the way, we handle all the road logistics in premium, air-conditioned comfort. You get to focus entirely on the massive rewards: tracking wild orangutans ethically in Bukit Lawang, standing before thundering canyon waterfalls, and waking up to the peaceful shores of Lake Toba.
Your North Sumatra Highlights Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Private Overland Transfer to Bukit Lawang
Welcome to Sumatra! To maximize your limited time, your private driver will meet you the second you land at Kualanamu International Airport (KNO) or pick you up from your Medan hotel. We’ll skip the stress of public logistics and head straight out in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle. Enjoy a scenic, panoramic drive past local countryside villages and fruit stands, arriving at the jungle edge of Bukit Lawang by late afternoon. Settle into your lodge, relax by the riverside, and charge your batteries for an action-packed week ahead.
Day 2: Ethical Orangutan Trekking & Scenic Drive to the Highlands
We hit the ground running this morning! After an early breakfast, step directly into the ancient canopy of Gunung Leuser National Park for a focused, half-day trek. Led by officially licensed local HPI guides, you’ll track wild orangutans and native wildlife. Our team strictly practices ethical observation—keeping respectful boundaries with zero animal feeding. After a fresh jungle picnic and an exciting, traditional river-tubing ride right back to the village, our private vehicle will be packed and waiting to whisk you up into the cool, refreshing volcanic highlands of Berastagi for the night.
Day 3: Volcano Vistas, Sipiso-Piso Waterfall & Cross to Lake Toba
A spectacular day of changing landscapes. Start your morning taking in views of the twin active peaks, Mount Sibayak and Mount Sinabung, while wandering through Berastagi’s colorful local markets. Next, we drive down the caldera ridge, stopping to stand before the magnificent 120-meter Sipiso-Piso waterfall as it drops into a dramatic rocky gorge. By afternoon, we reach the lakeside shores of Parapat and board the passenger ferry across the deep blue waters of Lake Toba to Samosir Island, checking right into your lakeside hotel.
Day 4: Deep Toba Batak Cultural Heritage Immersion
Today is dedicated entirely to discovering the ancient soul of Samosir Island. We’ll explore historic Batak villages, stepping inside the traditional, sweeping rooflines of King Siallagan’s courtyard in Ambarita, complete with its original stone trial chairs. You’ll learn about local spiritual legends, watch traditional Tor-Tor dance performances, and see the intricate hand-weaving of sacred local textiles before wrapping up the day with a legendary sunset reflecting over the massive volcanic lake.
Day 5: Lakeside Morning & Return Private Drive to Medan
Enjoy a relaxed, peaceful morning taking in the calm volcanic air of Lake Toba. You can go for a morning swim in the clean waters, rent a bicycle to zip through the surrounding rice fields, or simply relax on the shore. After lunch, we catch the ferry back to the mainland, where your trusted private driver will safely navigate the mountain passes to bring you back down to Medan city for your final evening hotel stay.
Day 6: Final Departure Onward Journey
Savor your final tropical breakfast at your hotel. Depending on your flight schedule, your private driver will meet you directly at your accommodation to transfer you smoothly and efficiently straight back to the airport terminal for your onward journey home. You’ll head to the gate having witnessed the ultimate North Sumatra highlights tour in less than a week!

Excellent rating
😉 Marion Dewilde My journey with Katka - Escape to Sumatra was the perfect blend of adventure and relaxation, with seamless organization and a genuinely welcoming vibe from start to finish. Seeing orangutans ethically in their natural habitat was a dream come true, and the wild elephant trekking was equally impressive thanks to the guides' incredible tracking skills in the jungle. The team treated us like family, and their kindness, combined with thoughtful details and a real connection to the local community, made the entire experience feel honest, warm, and truly special. Thank you Katka! :) Markéta J. If you're looking for the ultimate authentic and ethical jungle trekking experience, look no further than Escape of Sumatra's amazing multi-day programme in Batu Katak. I would like to highlight their approach to caring for nature and their respectful way of visiting and observing the beauty of the surrounding area. They are also well aware of the issue of overtourism and the urgent need to protect the area. We had a great time with our local guides, Ray and Sedarta, who told us lots of interesting things about life in the jungle and entertained us with so many jokes! I really appreciated Kacka's help in organising our visit, from choosing the proper programme for us, booking the accomodation to her constant assistance while we were travelling by local buses. P.S. I absolutely recommend booking at least two more days than you initially planned – it's an incredible experience, and well worth the extra time! Lenka Michálková We booked our trip with these amazing people, and it was the best decision we could have made! The guides Fabio and Dicky made the trip magical and took so good care of us, we also saw so many amazing animals. Highly recommend! Thea schroll I did the 1 day jungle trek with Pele as our guide. It felt very casual and flexible, and we were given choices between different routes depending on what we felt like. The guide was knowledgeable and easy-going, and was very good at listening out for and spotting various animals during our trek. Everything felt well-organised but stress-free. Fresh fruits and food were provided during the trek, with breaks whenever was desired. We made our way back by tubing down the river which was great fun :) Robin Jacobs We had a wonderful and very relaxing experience with Escape to Sumatra. Everything was well organized and easy from start to finish. Seeing orangutans in an ethical and respectful way was truly special and unforgettable. The whole experience felt genuine and welcoming. Highly recommended! Janine Thoenelt Great experience with the best guide of entire Sumatra and a good friend! Hope to come back to them soon! Marco Merli I did the wild elephant trekking tour. It went well, as expexted. I was impressed by the local guides tracking the elephants trough thick bushes, plants, trees. Their knowledge and skills surpassed my expectation. Tips for solo travellers: if you are offered an option between 2 hours offroad motorbike transportarion to the place and 2.5 hours car transportation to the place - chose the car. Your back and legs will help me later. Slav Hristov A perfectly organized trip around Sumatra from start to finish. Professional and friendly approach, perfect knowledge of the local conditions and genuine care for clients. Thanks to them, the whole stay was authentic, stress-free and full of unforgettable experiences. I definitely recommend it. Tereza Soukupova We had an amazing experience with this travel company in Sumatra and highly recommend it. Everything was perfectly organized from the start. The accommodation was great, with an excellent location right in the main part of town, close to cafés, restaurants, and local spots. One of the highlights was a jungle trek where we saw orangutans in their natural habitat – a truly unforgettable experience with wonderful guides who took great care of us. The food and camp were excellent, and the whole experience felt very authentic. During the rest of our stay, Kačka and Rama took care of all the logistics, organized our program, arranged scooters and drivers, and showed us the beauty of the surrounding nature. What we appreciated the most was how they helped us connect with local people not just as tourists, but as part of the community – spending evenings playing games with locals was a highlight. As a bonus, Kačka also guided us through a breathwork session, which was a unique and grounding experience. The company clearly focuses on ethical and authentic travel. Highly recommended! For sure we will visit Sumatra again with this company! ❤️ Michaela RezníkováVerified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
