Batu Katak to Bukit Lawang
5-Day Jungle Trekking
The best of both worlds from remote Batu Katak rainforest to the legendary jungles of Bukit Lawang.

THIS IS OUR NEWEST TREK STARTING OCTOBER 2026
A Jungle Trekking Like No Other
We wanted to create something that doesn’t exist as a standard jungle trek.
So we created a route that connects Batu Katak and Bukit Lawang on foot:Â two places that offer very different experiences of the Sumatran rainforest.
You begin in Batu Katak, one of the quieter and less-developed areas around the Gunung Leuser rainforest, and spend the next five days travelling through the jungle towards Bukit Lawang.
This isn’t a tour where you return to a comfortable camp every evening.
You live in the jungle.
You sleep in wild camps. You work with our porter team to build shelters. You learn about plants and natural resources. You look for food. You learn to read animal tracks and signs. You experience the rainforest not just as a place you visit, but as a place you have to understand.
And after five days, you enter in Bukit Lawang having experienced the journey between these two destinations, not simply visited them and check them off your bucket list.

5-Day Batu Katak to Bukit Lawang Jungle Trek
Five days of trekking, wild camping and rainforest exploration from Batu Katak to Bukit Lawang.
DAY 1 — Enter the Rainforest
Your expedition begins in Batu Katak, away from the busier trekking routes around Bukit Lawang. After meeting your local guides and porter team, you’ll leave the village behind and enter the rainforest on foot.
The first part of the journey is about adapting to the jungle — the heat, humidity, terrain and sounds of the forest. As you move deeper into the rainforest, your guides will begin introducing you to the environment around you. You’ll learn to look for animal tracks, feeding signs, plants and other clues that tell you what has been moving through the forest.
There is no prepared campsite waiting at the end of the day. Together with the team, you’ll establish your first wild jungle camp, prepare food and settle into your surroundings. This is your first night living in the rainforest.
DAY 2 — Deeper Into the Jungle
By the second morning, you’re no longer simply trekking through the jungle – you’re starting to understand it. After breakfast, you’ll continue through the rainforest with your guides, following the terrain and looking for signs of wildlife along the way.
Your guides will show you how to recognise tracks, calls, feeding areas and other signs of animals. You may hear wildlife long before you see it, and learning to understand these signs becomes part of the journey.
You’ll also learn more about the plants around you and how local knowledge has traditionally been used to understand and work with the forest. As the day comes to an end, the team will choose a suitable location for another wild camp. You’ll help with the practical side of jungle life before sitting down for dinner surrounded by the rainforest.
DAY 3 — Jungle Skills & Survival
This is where the experience becomes less about simply walking and more about learning how to live in the jungle. Together with your guides and porter team, you’ll learn practical jungle skills – working with natural materials, understanding available resources and creating basic shelter.
You’ll also continue tracking wildlife and learning how to read the forest around you. Sometimes the most interesting moments are the quiet ones: following a tiny track through the leaves, hearing a call somewhere above you, finding evidence that an animal passed through recently, or learning which plants your guides recognise immediately.
By evening, you’ll build another camp and prepare dinner together. Another night under the rainforest canopy.
DAY 4 — Towards Bukit Lawang
After several days in the rainforest, the journey begins to turn towards Bukit Lawang.
But this isn’t simply the final walk to the destination. You’re still travelling through the jungle, still following the route on foot and still relying on your guides to navigate the environment. The contrast becomes part of the experience. You started in the quieter rainforest around Batu Katak, far from the more established tourism infrastructure, and you’re now gradually moving towards Bukit Lawang.
Your final night is spent in the jungle before coming back to the village.
DAY 5 — Arrive in Bukit Lawang
Your final morning begins with one more breakfast in the rainforest before packing up camp and starting the final part of the journey.
Today, the goal is simple: Reach Bukit Lawang.
After five days of trekking from Batu Katak, you’ll finally arrive in Bukit Lawang, completing the route that connects these two very different gateways to the Gunung Leuser rainforest. And because this expedition finishes with a river section, the final approach to Bukit Lawang can include traditional river tubing.
After five days in the jungle, reaching Bukit Lawang isn’t just arriving at another destination.
You’ve walked there.
FIVE DAYS. NO SHORTCUTS.

We've had an amazing time with Escape to Sumatra team. Great and reliable organisation, the guides are knowledgeable and always happy to help and answer any questions. What I loved is that the company focuses on making the travel ethical for both the wildlife and also local people. This is so important and unfortunately often omitted aspect, but the team here made it their priority! I can only recommend booking your holidays with them.

Had a great time joining the 3 days/2 nights Mentawai tribe excursion! It is a once in a lifetime experience and definitely recommended! The tribe was welcoming, it was very interesting to see how they live (even if you can tell some traditions will be slowly lost), participating in their activities and the guide Laijet was very nice. Expect to spend a lot of time sitting, chatting, drinking coffee and smoking! I ended up the experience with a traditional tattoo made by Laijet and I really loved it!

Our overnight trekking experience with my fiancé was unforgettable. Our guides, Rendy and Anga, were amazing. knowledgeable, friendly, and made the whole journey special. The food was delicious, we saw incredible wildlife, and we had the chance to visit a local village. One of the highlights was the cooking class with a local family, where we learned about their culture and the conservation efforts the company is supporting within the community. If you’re looking to support a company that truly makes a positive difference, I highly recommend choosing this one. It was an experience that went beyond trekking. It was about connecting with nature, people, and meaningful conservation work.

My boyfriend and I recently did the 2D/1N jungle trek in Batu Katak with Escape to Sumatra and had a fantastic experience. We chose Batu Katak over Bukit Lawang because I had already visited Bukit Lawang and wanted something a little more authentic and off the beaten track. We knew there was a lower chance of seeing orangutans and unfortunately didn't see any this time, but that's part of visiting a truly wild environment! Our guides, Rey and Dika, were excellent and went out of their way to make sure we still had a great trip. We saw plenty of other wildlife, enjoyed some amazing food and learned so much from their knowledge of the jungle and local area. Be prepared though - this is a real jungle adventure! It's hot, humid, challenging in places and there will most likely be leeches. But if you're looking for an authentic rainforest experience, I'd highly recommend it.

We were completely satisfied with our experience with Escape to Sumatra. We joined the 2-day jungle trek in Bukit Lawang, and it exceeded our expectations. Our guides, Fabio and Angga, were fantastic. They were very knowledgeable and showed us a wide variety of animals and plants throughout the trek, making the experience both exciting and educational. They were also very funny and created a great atmosphere throughout the tour. We had a lot of fun with the whole group, which made the experience even more memorable. The food provided during the tour was excellent, and everything was well organized from start to finish. We felt well taken care of the entire time. We highly recommend Escape to Sumatra to anyone looking for an authentic and unforgettable jungle experience in Bukit Lawang!

We had an amazing jungle trekking experience with Escape to Sumatra. Our guides, Likki and Pele, were fantastic throughout the entire tour. We were lucky enough to see orangutans and gibbons in the wild, which was truly unforgettable. Everything was perfectly organised from start to finish. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all excellent, and chef Genji took great care of us the whole trip. You could really tell the team puts a lot of effort into making the experience special. If you love adventure, nature and wildlife, this is absolutely something I would recommend. One of the highlights of our trip to Sumatra!
