Heart Behind the Escape to Sumatra
Our Vision for Conscious Travel in Sumatra
About Escape to Sumatra a conscious travel project founded by Kacka and Rama, created together with local communities across Sumatra. Based in Bukit Lawang, we specialize in ethical orangutan trekking, responsible jungle trekking in Sumatra, wildlife encounters, and immersive jungle retreats that respect nature, culture, and traditional ways of life.
Escape to Sumatra was born from personal healing journey in the rainforests of Gunung Leuser National Park. After experiencing corporate burnout, co-founder Kacka discovered the transformative power of Sumatra’s wilderness and the importance of protecting it through ethical tourism.

Our Mission
We create meaningful jungle retreats and ethical wildlife tours that heal both people and nature. Our mission is to support local communities in Bukit Lawang and Batu Katak while protecting critically endangered Sumatran orangutans through responsible tourism practices.
Our Vision
To become Sumatra’s leading ethical jungle retreats and tour operator, proving that sustainable tourism can provide healing experiences for travelers while creating lasting positive impact for wildlife conservation and local community development.
Why We’re Different
Ethical Wildlife Encounters: We maintain safe distances from orangutans and all wildlife, never feeding or disturbing animals in their natural habitat.
Healing-Focused Retreats: Specializing in jungle retreats for burnout recovery, grief healing, and reconnecting with nature’s simple wisdom.
Local Community Partnership: Working directly with village communities, providing sustainable employment and supporting traditional ways of life.
Conservation Impact: Every tour contributes to wildlife protection, habitat preservation, and anti-poaching efforts in Gunung Leuser National Park.
Authentic Experiences: From traditional Sumatran cooking to quiet wildlife observation in Batu Katak, we offer genuine cultural immersion away from tourist crowds.
Our Commitment
All profits support local guides, village cooperatives, and conservation initiatives. We believe nature doesn’t need us, but we desperately need nature to survive and thrive.
Many of our experiences are inspired by the ecosystems of places like Gunung Leuser National Park, a UNESCO-listed rainforest in Sumatra.

Meet the team

Kacka – General manager of Escape to Sumatra
I’m from the Czech Republic and have been traveling solo since 2017, falling in love with Sumatra’s wildlife, jungles, and local culture. I now live here and explore new places regularly, sharing authentic experiences and insights with our guests. I help travelers plan their trips, connect with local guides, and discover the real Sumatra from hidden jungle spots to local traditions while keeping travel sustainable and enjoyable.

Rama – On Site manager of Escape to Sumatra
Born and raised in Bukit Lawang, I’ve been guiding travelers since 2017. I’ve loved the jungle and its wildlife since I was a child and am passionate about promoting sustainable and ethical tourism in my hometown. I enjoy planting flowers, growing vegetables, and exploring medicinal plants to understand their benefits. I love sharing my knowledge of Bukit Lawang’s wildlife and nature with visitors while caring for the environment we all depend on.

Rey – Orangutan trekking guide Batu Katak
I was born and raised in Batu Katak and have always been passionate about the area’s wildlife, including rare plants like Titanum amorphopallus and Rafflesia. I love showing travelers the untouched nature of Batu Katak. I’m always laughing, singing, and capturing fun moments on video — sharing the beauty and excitement of the jungle with everyone who visits.

Rob – Guide in Mentawai Tribe Siberut
I was born and raised on Siberut Island and have been fascinated by Mentawai culture since childhood, learning the language and forming strong bonds with local shamans. My mission is to guide travelers respectfully while supporting the tribe, including helping shamans preserve their traditional tattoos. I aim to give guests an authentic experience and show how the Mentawai people live while keeping their unique traditions alive.

Mili – Tattoo artist in Mentawai Tribe Siberut
I come from Srilogui Village on the island of Siberut and have been a tattoo artist for over a year. I’m passionate about dogs and help support the local dog-feeding program.
