Sumatra Flooding Community Support in Action: Flood Relief Donations for Aceh
Community Support in Action: Flood Relief Donations for Sumatra
In the past weeks, parts of Aceh have been heavily affected by flooding. While news moves fast, the reality on the ground stays difficult much longer and especially for families in smaller towns and villages.
Together with Sam’s Bungalow, and thanks to the support of local businesses in Bukit Lawang such as Jack’s Bar, close friends, and our wider community, we organized a donation trip to help provide immediate support to those affected.

How the Donation Was Organized
This was not a big organization or a government project, but just people coming together.
Sam’s Bungalow coordinated closely with other local businesses and individuals in Bukit Lawang to collect funds and essential supplies. Everyone contributed what they could. Some donated money, others helped with logistics, time, or transport.
Once everything was prepared, we traveled together in three cars, bringing the donations directly to Aceh to make sure the help reached people who truly needed it.
What We Brought
The donations were used to provide basic necessities, including:
- Food supplies
- Clean drinking water
- Essential daily items for families affected by the floods
In emergency situations like this, even simple things can make a huge difference.

Current Situation in Aceh
While the water has receded in some areas, the situation is not fully back to normal. Many families are still cleaning mud from their homes, dealing with damaged belongings, and limited access to resources.
Flooding in Sumatra often affects remote regions first, where help can take longer to arrive. This is why local initiatives and community-driven support are so important.
Why Local Collaboration Matters
One of the most powerful things we witnessed was how local communities support each other. Small businesses, friends, and residents didn’t wait, they acted.
This is the side of Sumatra we don’t see in headlines:
People helping quietly, sharing what they have, and showing up when it matters.
Thank You
A big thank you to:
- Sam’s Bungalow for organizing and coordinating the effort
- Jack’s Bar Bukit Lawang for contributions
- All local businesses, friends, and individuals who contributed
- Everyone who donated, shared, or supported in any way
This was a reminder that even small actions, when combined, can create real impact.
