The easiest Medan to Pulau Weh route is: Medan or Kualanamu Airport → Banda Aceh → Ulee Lheue Port → ferry to Balohan Port → Pulau Weh.

The island is known for snorkelling, diving, coral reefs, simple beach accommodation, scooter drives, quiet sunsets and a much slower feeling than Bali or many other Indonesian islands.

Pulau Weh is not the place to come for beach clubs, luxury shopping or nightlife.

It is the place to come if you want sea, nature, local life, diving, snorkelling, hammocks, simple restaurants and a bit of peace after jungle trekking.

That is why it works very well after a trip to Bukit Lawang or Batu Katak. You do the rainforest first, then you relax by the sea.

Step 1: Medan to Banda Aceh by flight

The fastest way to travel from Medan to Banda Aceh is by flight.

You fly from Kualanamu International Airport, which serves Medan, to Sultan Iskandar Muda Airport in Banda Aceh. Current flight search results show direct flights on this route, with flight time usually around 1.5 hours depending on airline and schedule.

This is the best option if:

You have limited time
You do not want a long night bus journey
You are travelling with children
You are arriving after a jungle trek and need comfort
You want to avoid losing a full travel day on the road

But here is the important part: do not only check the flight duration. You also need to check whether your flight arrival time works with the ferry schedule to Pulau Weh.

From Banda Aceh airport, you still need to get to Ulee Lheue Port. The port is not at the airport, so you need extra time for taxi, waiting, tickets and boarding.

If your flight arrives too late, you may need to sleep one night in Banda Aceh and take the ferry the next morning.

This is not a bad thing. Banda Aceh is worth a stop.

Step 2: Medan to Banda Aceh by night bus

The night bus is the budget option.

Several travel and accommodation sources describe overnight buses from Medan to Banda Aceh, usually leaving in the afternoon or evening and arriving the next morning. For backpackers, this can be a practical way to save money and avoid paying for one night of accommodation.

But I want to be very honest: this is not always the easiest option.

The journey is long. You may not sleep well. The roads can feel tiring. And if you do it directly after jungle trekking, you might arrive exhausted.

The night bus is best if:

You are on a budget
You are used to long travel days
You have flexible plans
You do not mind being uncomfortable
You have time in case things change

I would not recommend planning a difficult jungle trek, then immediately taking a long night bus, then expecting to feel fresh for diving or snorkelling the next day.

Sumatra is beautiful, but it is tiring. Give yourself space.

Step 3: Banda Aceh to Pulau Weh by ferry

Once you are in Banda Aceh, you need to get to Ulee Lheue Port.

From there, ferries cross to Balohan Port on Pulau Weh / Sabang. Official Indonesian tourism information also describes the ferry route from Banda Aceh’s Ulee Lheue Sea Port towards Sabang/Pulau Weh.

There are usually two types of ferry:

Fast ferry
This is quicker and more comfortable for most travellers.

Slow ferry / car ferry
This is slower, cheaper and useful for people travelling with vehicles.

At the time of research, local travel sources list fast ferry departures around 08:00, 10:00 and 16:00/16:15, and slower/car ferry options around 08:00, 12:00 and 16:30, but you should always check the current schedule before travelling because ferry times can change.

ASDP, the Indonesian ferry operator, announced that ticketing for the Ulee Lheue–Balohan route moved fully online through Ferizy from April 2026 for ASDP ferry services, so travellers should check current ticket rules before going to the port.

My advice: never plan Pulau Weh with a tight same-day connection.

Do not land in Banda Aceh and expect everything to work perfectly with no buffer. Do not book an onward flight from Banda Aceh too close after your return ferry. And do not assume the last ferry will always fit your plan.

With Sumatra travel, buffer time is not wasted time. It is what keeps your trip enjoyable.

Should you stay in Banda Aceh before Pulau Weh?

Yes, staying one night in Banda Aceh can be a very good idea.

Many travellers try to skip Banda Aceh completely and go straight to Pulau Weh. That can work if your timing is perfect. But if your flight arrives later in the day, or if you are tired after long travel, staying in Banda Aceh makes the journey much easier.

Banda Aceh is also not just a transit city.

You can visit the Baiturrahman Grand Mosque, one of the most important landmarks in the city. Aceh tourism sources also mention nearby historical and tsunami-related sites, including the Tsunami Museum.

A simple Banda Aceh stop can look like this:

Arrive in Banda Aceh
Check into your hotel
Visit Baiturrahman Grand Mosque
Visit the Tsunami Museum if open
Eat Acehnese food
Sleep
Take the morning ferry to Pulau Weh

This is much calmer than rushing from airport to port with your backpack, sweating, stressing and hoping the boat has not left.

How many days do you need for Pulau Weh?

Please do not go to Pulau Weh for one night only unless you really have no other choice.

It takes effort to get there, so give the island enough time.

My recommendation:

2 nights: possible, but rushed
3 nights: minimum comfortable stay
4–5 nights: much better if you want snorkelling, diving and slow island time
1 week: great if you want to properly relax

Remember, you need travel time on both sides. Getting from Medan to Pulau Weh is not like taking a short taxi to the beach.

If you only have 5–6 days total in Sumatra, I would usually not add Pulau Weh unless it is your main priority. In that case, do fewer places and enjoy them properly.

Best route if you are also visiting Bukit Lawang

This is where many travellers get confused.

They want to see everything:

Orangutans in Bukit Lawang
Jungle trekking
Berastagi volcano
Lake Toba
Banda Aceh
Pulau Weh

And they want to do it in one week.

Please do not do this to yourself.

Sumatra looks smaller on the map than it feels in real life. Roads are slower, traffic can be unpredictable, and moving between places takes energy.

Here are better route ideas.

Route 1: Medan → Bukit Lawang → Banda Aceh → Pulau Weh

This route works if your main priorities are orangutans and the island.

Example:

Day 1: Arrive in Medan, transfer to Bukit Lawang

Day 4: Return / rest in Bukit Lawang
Day 5: Travel to Medan or fly to Banda Aceh

This is a good itinerary if you want jungle and beach without trying to do too many stops.

Route 2: Medan → Bukit Lawang → Berastagi → Lake Toba → Banda Aceh → Pulau Weh

This is better if you have around 12–14 days.

This is best if you already know you want a beach/diving trip and do not want jungle trekking.

But if you are already coming all the way to North Sumatra, I honestly think adding at least Bukit Lawang is worth it — especially if seeing orangutans in the rainforest is on your list.

Where to stay on Pulau Weh

Most travellers stay around:

Iboih
Good for snorkelling, budget stays, dive shops and simple beach life.

Gapang
Quieter, good for diving and a more relaxed atmosphere.

Sumur Tiga
Beautiful beach area, better if you want sea views and a more peaceful stay.

Sabang town
More practical, but less beachy.

If it is your first time, Iboih or Gapang usually make the most sense.

Book accommodation before you arrive, especially if you want someone to help arrange transport from Balohan Port.

Common mistakes travellers make

Mistake 1: Trusting Google Maps too much

Google Maps can be useful, but in Sumatra it often makes travel look easier than it is.

A route may say a few hours, but traffic, road conditions, rain, ferry timing and local transport can change everything.

Mistake 2: Booking a tight same-day ferry and flight connection

This is one of the biggest mistakes.

Do not book your return ferry from Pulau Weh and your flight out of Banda Aceh too close together. Ferries can be delayed, full or affected by weather.

Mistake 3: Adding Pulau Weh to a rushed itinerary

Pulau Weh is not a quick stop. If you only have a few days, choose fewer places.

A rushed itinerary might technically work on paper, but it will not feel good.

Mistake 4: Arriving in Banda Aceh too late

If your flight arrives after the last ferry, you need to sleep in Banda Aceh.
